A thing of life..
On a hot summer afternoon, Mel and Deb slouched in the seats of a cafeteria. It was the same throughout the semester - boring classes, recycled gossip, fake enthusiasm, but now unceasing sweat beads and sticky college uniforms are a bonus.
"Engineering is bogus!" blurted Deb.
Mel wanted to deny the truth, however, she pretended to ignore her statement. Both of them stared at the bland food and exchanged tired looks. Lost in their thoughts and, they headed for the exit.
Deb pulled Mel's arm and questioned: "What is the best thing in the world Mel?".
Awe-struck Mel chuckled and said, "Hmm..lemme see a thing.., probably Water!?..".
Deb replied "Now wait why? why water?" thinking seriously.
Mel got excited and began to talk animatedly "See, we would not exist without water. It is the element of life! We need it every day and almost always in all the activities that we do. It curbs thirst, washes away the dirt, generates power and fosters growth in plants. Plus, swimming and water parks" grinning widely and winking at Deb.
The conversation continued and they continued debating, agreeing and disagreeing about silly things and what not. When they were just about to enter the classroom, Deb and Mel simultaneously said: "It's gotta be Chocolate."
The question haunted Mel. No matter what she did, her mind quietly meditated to find a satisfying answer. Mel was helpless and talked to herself. Is it love? But, it is an emotion, a feeling. And also, there are two types- conditional and unconditional love. Wars were fought, kingdoms were destroyed and united for the sake of it. She remembered her high school days reading Romeo and Juliet and the class spending months to interpret its implication, and Shakespeare's beautiful sonnets which delivered the depth. Science too cannot explain it entirely other than attributing it to Oxytocin and its interplay with our logically biological system. It is not just about romance she came to a conclusion, it is an inbuilt enigmatic feature which gives us strength, makes us happy, very sacred and even profane in some parts of the world. Ultimately, it's ubiquitous and magical!
After a long day, Mel opened a jar of Nutella and pressed play on a new season of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. After a while, both her mind and tummy were content. Staring at the ceiling fan, she loved how she can get lost in oblivion. Out of the blue, something struck and she jumped out of her bed and sprinted towards Deb's dorm.
"I know the answer" Mel started singing, throwing her hands up in the air and swaying in the corridor.
"Are you crazy? What are you talking about?" asked Deb confused.
"Remember the question you asked me, well, I know it now." said Mel pursing her lips.
"Common tell me already!" said Deb shaking Mel's shoulders.
"Okay, stop. Wait. Its. HUMAN SPIRIT!!!" Mel said as she saw the emotions bounce in Deb's face.
"How and why missy?" asked Deb folding her arms.
Though Mel was still coming up with new theories and views about life and human endeavor, she wanted to satiate Deb by phrasing her thoughts so as to elucidate her reasoning neither supporting philosophy nor religion.
Then everything was a blur. The two friends talked about everything that is seemingly related or unrelated to the concept of Human Spirit...
